Besides providing privacy, shutters can help to protect and block your home from drafts and street noise. Compared with shades, shutters are more proficient since they enable you to filter light to the exact level you desire – from bright light, to filtered light, to pitch dark.

Here are four styles of shutters you can choose:

1. Full-height shutters

Advantages: These shutters cover the window entirely, from bottom to top. They are very well in insulating your home from draft and noise. They work best on bedrooms and patio doors.
Disadvantages: Compared with other models of shutters, full-height shutters are less adaptable since they can’t offer partial coverage when needed.

2. Two-tier shutters

Advantages: These shutters have two sets of panels, one above another, each operates independently. Besides providing the best privacy, they also provide the best control over the levels of light. They work best on windows that’s facing onto the street. When needed, the bottom tier can be closed.
Disadvantages: Because of the two sets of panels, they look busier than other types of shutters.

3. Cafe Style Shutters

Advantages: These shutters are lighter and cheaper than the full-height shutters.
Disadvantages: They aren’t excellent to block draft and noise. They can only cover the lower half of the window. If you require total darkness for a room, don’t choose these shutters.

4. Solid Shutters

Advantages: These shutters have solid panels that cover the entire window. They are available in different styles: cafe-style shutters, two-tier shutters, or full-height shutters. They are excellent heat retainer, hence they work best in cold climates.
Disadvantages: It’s either closed or open, so there is no enough space for flexibility. And they are not used widely today.
