A stark house in the desert

House in the desert

This house does really look uncompromising and harsh, reflecting the desert landscape where it’s set.

However, the house is cooled by the concrete mass which also cuts off the view of the surrounding suburban houses.

Integrated concrete walls in white cast create a contemporary update: a new touch of Mediterranean wall.

The planting on the surroundings is reflected by the subtle colors of the house. The palette has been designed in a monotone to reflect the subtle green, silvers, and grays cast of the desert landscape.

Bathrooms and bedrooms are on the ground level, located underneath, delivering cool environment as well as providing shade and privacy. (more…)

Interesting green house in Jakarta

nGree house in Jakarta

Set in the tropical Jakarta, this complex house is featured with multiple windows to let the breezes go inside.

The house’s patchwork pattern of wooden windows is offset with white stucco. This has made a fascinating contrast in variation and detail.

Together with the breezes provided by the windows, the cool floors also help in cooling the spaces of the interior.

In each space, the beams and columns are exposed with its natural plaster color, between the white walls.

And Terracotta tiles are chosen for the roof. Terracotta tiles with open pores have ability to balance the heat immediately. (more…)

Stone house built by ancient people

Ancient stone house

Modern people have just learned that temperatures in houses can be moderated by using stones.

However, the knowledge was known already hundreds of years ago by ancient people. And this beautiful old stone house gives one of the many proofs.

Located in a hot-climate area of Croatia, this old house was built by using high thermal mass materials, such as stone, masonry and wood.

The materials amazingly absorb the hot daytime sun, bringing down interior heat. And at night, the materials will release the heat into the interior, delivering warmth in the cold evenings. (more…)

Three practical and pretty options for walls

The photo 1
There’s a lot of options for walls. No need to feel restricted to wallpaper or paint. Here are just a few choices you can use:

1. Tile. It’s commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms because it’s facile to clean and easily get wet. The tile in the bathroom above is of a somewhat retro; it’s also fun, punchy and graphic. However, there is no a rule that requires you for using tile only in kitchens and bathrooms.

2. Wood. A lot of people have dressed up their walls with reclaimed wood paneling. It’s indeed a great idea. Wood paneling can create an edgy or rustic sensibility for a room. (more…)

A very short introduction to Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra is an ancient Hindu system of architecture applied on temples, home, office, etc. However, Vastu is not merely based on religious concept. It is a scientific system based mainly on directional alignments. The Indian people believe that Shiva (one of the most popular Hindu’s gods) is the first master of Vastu.

Vastu requires no belief. According to Vastu, if a building is oriented to the right direction, then prosperity, health and peace inevitably will be had. In Vastu, the entrance of a building (especially home) should face the East direction. This will allow the light and heat from the sun to enter easily into the home, spreading positive energy for the occupants. Hence, the East (as the main direction) must always be taken into consideration when placing the other spaces or rooms.
